Memorial Day is one of the most solemn and meaningful holidays in the United States. It is a day set aside to remember and honor the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Unlike Veterans Day—which celebrates all who have served—Memorial Day is specifically dedicated to those who died in military service to our country. It’s a day of national mourning, reflection, and gratitude.
We celebrate Memorial Day not only to honor the fallen, but to remind ourselves of the high cost of the freedoms we enjoy. Every flag placed, every bell rung, and every moment of silence is a small gesture to say: We remember. We are grateful.
Memorial Day has roots dating back to the Civil War, a conflict that claimed more American lives than any other. In the years that followed, communities across the country began organizing springtime tributes to fallen soldiers, often decorating their graves with flowers—hence the original name Decoration Day.
On May 30, 1868, General John A. Logan, a leader of a Union veterans’ organization, declared the first official Decoration Day. That first observance saw 5,000 volunteers decorate over 20,000 graves at Arlington National Cemetery.
Following World War I, the observance expanded to include those who died in all American wars, not just the Civil War.
In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a federal holiday by an act of Congress and was moved to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend—part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. While the long weekend offers time for leisure and family, the heart of the holiday remains rooted in remembrance.
American flags are flown at half-staff until noon, then raised to full-staff to symbolize the rise of the living carrying on the legacy of the fallen.
At 3:00 p.m. local time, Americans are encouraged to observe a National Moment of Remembrance, a quiet minute to reflect on the sacrifices made.
Many people visit military cemeteries, memorials, and monuments.
Across the country, towns host parades featuring veterans, active-duty military, and patriotic tributes.
While it’s easy to associate Memorial Day with the start of summer, the sales, and the barbecues, we are encouraged to take time to remember why this day exists. It's a time to teach our children about service and sacrifice, to thank those who continue to serve, and to never forget those who gave their lives for something greater than themselves.
Freedom isn’t free—and Memorial Day is our reminder of that truth.
